Comments:

I have lived in Las Cruces since 1986, when I was divorced after a ten-year marriage and moved back "home." I retired in January of 2011 from my position as an office manager at New Mexico State University after 30 total years of service in "split shifts."

No husband or partner, but I keep busy working two days a week as the office manager for a local architectural firm and managing the work flow for the three of us who share that position. I also am very involved with my small Methodist church here, coordinating four different groups and serving as the administrative council secretary. I love theater and music and also Aggie sports, so I stay pretty busy.

My two children (well, they're not children, are they?), Megan and Craig, live in Las Cruces as well. Megan is in her first year as a college assistant professor of theater at NMSU, and Craig is finally a full-time college student and doing very well.

Would love to hear from people who might remember me, though I can't attend the reunion in September. A previously planned Amtrak trip to Chicago with a good friend is already scheduled at the same time.

School Story:

I was a major nerd in high school - member of Future Teachers Association, Tri-Hi-Y, Honor Society and yearbook staff. I never really dated any RHS students (only a few NMMI cadets). My major memories are of having a great time on the El Coyote staff with some wonderful people and with Truett Worley as our advisor and sponsor. Every day someone would make a run for "supplies" - in other words, sodas for the group. I was extremely shy, particularly around the male gender, but I got over that in college. I hope to make the reunion if possible.

Judy was a very good friend of mine in junior high.  We lived just a few blocks apart from the "Blevins sisters," and we had so much fun.  I will never forget Judy and I trying to make fudge in my mom's kitchen when the handle on the pan Judy was holding broke - and she couldn't stop laughing!  Never mind that she was in danger.  And when we were in Rainbow girls together she and I did a skit for one of the talent shows.  Again, Judy started to giggle about half way through.  What a lovely, fun person she was.  I know she will be missed tremendously by her family.  May God grant all of them strength and peace.

I think it is time to share an experience I had that I am realizing makes it difficult for me to attend our class reunions. In high school I did not date (except for NMMI cadets, who were clearly desperate). By the time I was maybe a sophomore in college at NMSU I must have somehow magically looked better, because I was dating and finally felt accepted. I was hired full time right out of high school as a medical transcriptionist for Dr. Blauw, a pathologist, and I worked full time for him every summer even right after graduation. During the summer between my junior and senior years I was at what I believe was called Plains Park shopping center (near RHS - not sure if that's the name) when I ran into a guy who also graduated with our class and had been very popular in high school. He attended a different university, and apparently I had changed sufficiently that he felt he could ask me out. We went on one date, to a drive-in theater. Before heading to the theater, he went to a liquor store and bought a pint of whiskey. At the drive in he proceeded to drink the entire pint, then pulled out of the parking space before the movie was over, tearing the speaker off of its stand. He headed to a dirt road and parked, where I became the victim of a date rape. He began to cry and said that he was sorry but he was sure he was going to Viet Nam and that he couldn't marry me. Are you kidding? Who would marry such a jerk? I am beginning to think that this affected my self esteem and my subsequent discomfort around some of my classmates. In light of the "Me Too" movement, it is time to get this off my chest and share it so you can all understand. I wish you all the best and several of you have been good friends. Thanks for listening!!

Hi, Janet - Since I'm hearing from Sue Raby now about what is going on with many of our classmates, I decided to look at the website today and saw your message. I want to tell you that you were never invisible - I always thought you were a great person, funny, nice, friendly and sweet to everyone. And when I look at your recent photos, I can tell you are still that same person - beautiful inside and out! Even your children exude the same...I hope to make the next reunion, so I will see you there! Blessings to you and yours, Sherry

Hi Janet! I wanted to wish you a Happy Birthday even though it is a over a week late. How does it feel to be 69? Can you believe that much time has passed? I pray you have your most wonderful year yet! God bless you tremendously. You work for the same architect firm as my brother who is an architect in Roswell, his name is Hal Barnett. Hope you are doing fine. I really enjoyed your pictures you posted. I missed you at the 50th reunion, but that was my first since the 10th reunion. I usually went to Chuck's and he was from the class of 63! God bless you & love you! Lynn Barnett Bratcher

I had saved this great photo in my yearbook and thought you all would appreciate seeing it - from the Roswell Daily Record in July 1974.
